I don't really have sympathy for people who are stealing though. If the judge is going to hammer out a disproportionate sentence that's another matter.
In some ways, your two examples tie back together quite interestingly. If she got her hand cut off for stealing the ornament, would that be better or worse?
Next time, would she think of stealing if she lost the hand (or would she even risk it in the first place?)? Or if she got off easy, would she steal again, but risk getting shot and killed in the process? Lose the offending hand, or lose your entire life? The scenario was first introduced in the context of a computer game I played over a decade ago ironically.
Obviously the pro-life position is to not inflict harm on others as a punishment, but this why that form of law is a bit archaic.

um, wow. read the comments in the other vid and you guys get bent outta shape for the strangest reasons sometimes.
realism? really? and wait, where does this happen in real life?
Personally witnessed someone attacking another person recently. Yeah, I have two essentially unrelated stories in the one post. <shrug>
Bizarrely enough, I found myself at the same 'camera angle', so to speak, pulling the attacker off the victim.
Even if there's no squibs going off, it's a sickening, *dark sight to behold, and I'm sickened with each and every one of you for enjoying this.
For shame.
It's interesting. All socially repressed males likely rejoiced when the guy cracked her, and yet most would probably never hit a girl, and spit on those who do.
I suppose these are our primal "instincts" or whatever you'd like to call them coming out.
This is similar to the reaction people have when someone who did something wrong gets punished in spades, and unjustly so. For example, many people would savagely rejoice to hear of a rapist being castrated and bled to death for what he did. Is that a just fate in a civilized society? No. Are these people sick in the mind? Seemingly.
But not necessarily.
I am not saying that I am apparently psychotic and think that cruelly rejecting a person is a crime and deserves significant retribution, by the way.
These are normal reactions. What of ourselves individually and as a species, at our lowest levels comprises them; who knows? Are they morally correct? No.
Also, you are correct in being disturbed by this reaction. I just thought I'd shed some light on exactly what was going on.
In short, I'd worry more about Sharia law and 18 year old girls that get convicted of Grand Theft for stealing a plastic Christmas lawn ornament that happened to have a $5000 GPS transmitter in it (yeah, that actually happened).

Hey dag. Sorry about that. Basically, I created an account under this email address a few months ago. I can't remember the login name, though. So I created this account.
Please delete my old one. I didn't know I couldn't create two accounts. It won't happen again.
Thanks!
